There are literally dozens of different anti-virus and security programs for PC and Mac. There is also Mobile Security now for tablets, BlackBerry, and Android. It is important to make sure your data is secure, your files are safe against hackers, your system is protected against viruses or malware, and that you have a way to get your data cleaned off your phone if it is stolen (as well as locate the stolen device with a tracking system). Having an anti-virus or security program does not mean that you cannot get infected with a virus. By having this coverage and keeping it up-to-date, it decreases your risk, protects your private information, and helps limit and repair infections that do occur.
ESET Smart Security was recently rated #1 in the world for its many benefits including anti-spam, anti-virus, parental control, firewall, and internet protection. Interestingly enough, ESET also produces anti-virus for mobile devices as well. Schneider's finds this system works well with XP and Vista because it has a very small footprint. Retail $79.99 for 1 user for 1 year, 3 year user is also available.
BullGuard Internet Security features all of the above, with the added protection for social media, and safe browsing. It comes highly recommended at Schneider's. Retail $69.99 for 1 user for 1 year, 3 user is also available for $10 more.
Trend Micro Titanium Security (formerly PC-Cillian) has been one of the longest standing companies since Symantec. Trend Micro comes recommended by Asus and pre-installed on many of their notebooks today. Retail $69.99 for 3 user.
Any of these 4 anti-virus programs feature both the anti-virus and firewall. Whatever coverage you choose to go with, make sure you only have one program. By having multiple anti-virus or security programs, the programs fight for control, and the viruses slip right through undetected. One should only have one full solution intalled. Schneider's recommends that users don't go with just anti-virus, but also don't go over kill and install the Total or 360 solutions. Users want a middle-of-the-road solution like the Internet Security packages. This helps maximize performance and increases protection.
Stay away from free anti-virus programs! In an average week of 30 computers, the majority of computers that have viruses have AVG Free Edition, Norton, McAfee, Avast, Viper, Bell Internet Security, or Rogers Security installed. Many times, these programs slow down the computers, and prevent software programs from working correctly. Users who have had these programs can't believe how much quicker their system runs, and how they don't get infected once they have switched to Schneider's most recommended solutions. For users who refuse to pay for anti-virus, Schneider's always suggests Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It's free, and does not cause a lot of hassle. The system footprint is also very little. However, Schneider's does not recommend this as the best solution, because Schneider's has witnessed computers become infected with MSE. Schneider's experiences a lot less computers infected with the recommended solutions.
Macs, phones, and tablets do need anti-virus. Viruses for Macs are becoming more and more common. Norton makes anti-virus for Mac, however, Norton is not Schneider's favourite anti-virus due to its large system footprint that uses a lot of resources, thus making the system slower. In this case, a program called Intego Internet Security has worked very well for us in the past because it works with Boot Camp on both Windows and the Mac OS. Retail $99.99 for 2 user for 1 year. ESET also features Cyber Security for $59.99 for 1 user for 1 year. Both are great solutions!
McAfee Mobile Security has a great mobile solution out for BlackBerry that enables users to back-up their contacts and data, as well as locate their lost device, and wipe the device remotely if needed. Although Schneider's does not recommend McAfee for PC, this mobile security solution beats the mark on all other companies that offer solutions for BlackBerry according to the staff at Schneider's.
