An armoured backup strategy

Posted by Carl Rainville, Québécom 22-09-2021 11:19 AM

You have certainly heard about the recent security breaches that affected large Quebec companies such as Desjardins or Promutuel. These companies lost an astronomical amount of money while seeing their operations paralyzed. Small and medium-sized businesses are also affected by various computer attacks, but the media obviously do not talk about it.

Since it is impossible to protect your data 100% from every conceivable risk, your best weapon is a bulletproof backup process. The 3-2-1 backup strategy was designed to do just that. Let’s take a closer look at this strategy, which consists of protecting your data by having 3 copies of your data on 2 different media, 1 of which will be physically backed up outside your main site.

3 copies of the same file
In addition to the raw data on your main server, you need to take care of 2 additional copies that will be made regularly. Losing a few hours of data is obviously better than a week!

2 different types of media
In order to ensure that a failure doesn’t occur on two similar types of media at the same time, it is preferable to use 2 separate media solutions.

1 external copy
In the event of a disaster, it is important that a copy of your data be off your main site. The Cloud backup option is the best choice for this.

+1: The archive
And for those who like bonus points, we suggest that you take an additional backup on a USB key or external hard drive at regular intervals, made by a technician on a different medium each time. This copy, frozen in time and completely independent of the online data, will allow you to protect yourself even more from a possible contamination by ransomware.

So here is an example that would follow the 3-2-1 backup strategy:

  • Raw data on your file or production server;
  • A backup on NAS;
  • An external backup on a Cloud;
  • +1: Backup on an external medium every 3 months.
